  • INSPIRE ME MONDAYS - GET YOUR KICKS

I just returned from a two week long trek out west with my little family. Just me, my husband, the littles, and I-40. It was a loooong drive, but we broke it up and made stops along the way to make it a little more interesting. It's definitely a rarity nowadays for families to travel long distances the old fashioned way and I'm proud of us for doing it. Planes are obviously more efficient and with gas and hotel rooms to pay for, maybe even cheaper in the end, but I digress. We did it by car, and it was the most. I'm so grateful my kids were able to experience the beauty America has to offer with their very own eyes and at such a young age. They marveled at the change of scenery and once we arrived at our destination, they spent a week beach hopping the SoCal coast. It was an adventure that I hope they will carry with them always, and certainly the first of many more to come.

    P.S. California has my soul.

We traveled sans fancy cameras so all of the images were shot with an iphone and edited using the vsco cam app only.

Oh, I also turned 30 on this trip. Happy birthday to me!

I've decided to start this blog series for a couple of reasons. 1) People really hate on Monday; and 2) We could all use some inspiration.

As my 8 year old friends and I used to say back in the day, "it's a free country." Life is what you make it. The Man may do many things you don't agree with, but no one but you can make the decision to stick with something you hate for the rest of your life. We have options. We make choices and our choices become our lives. At the ripe age of 18 we are given the freedom to compose our own lives. We blaze our own trails and build our own futures. If you hate Monday, or any day of the week for that matter, your hatred stems from a negative association. Monday is your punching bag. It's psychological. If you dread what lies before you, set a plan into action and CHOOSE to CHANGE IT. Don't let excuses rule your life. Stay positive, be patient, keep your goals on the front burner, and you will see your dreams into fruition... I promise. Now quit your whinin and get to steppin.

That being said, my point isn't really to try and change your view of Monday. That's a come to jesus moment that you have to have with yourself. I'm simply doing this in the hopes that I may create a momentary diversion from the stress that Monday brings. There are so many influential people around us creating and doing. Whether it be a person, a place, an object, or something as abstract as a idea, I'm seeking out all things beautifying in the hopes that I, along with you, will remember that inspiration is all around us. We just have to open our eyes to see it.

  • INSPIRE ME MONDAYS - WORD TO YOUR MUTHA

Yesterday was quite fantastic. To start off, I woke up to a quiet household, which is rare for a Sunday. As I tiptoed to my computer I heard giggling coming from my kids' room. This lasted for about 10 minutes until my precious little babies came running into the room simultaniously screaming "HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!" All that giggling was them "practicing" saying that sweet phrase together. Gah. I love them.

We then got all dressed and met up with my wonderful mommy friend Marz and her daughter Amira for breakfast at my most favorite brunch cafe on the planet, Marche. If you have not been, you must go and have the french toast paired with a cup of Drew's Brew ......drool.

The rest of the day was spent lazing around with my wonderful husband and children, in my "sexy" pants as I like to call them (they are quite the opposite), doing absolutely nothing. Oh what a wonderful day Mother's Day is. As for my own mama, we are getting together to celebrate later this week. I like to extend holidays because well, why not? I hope all you mothers out there took the time to celebrate yourselves this weekend. We don't do that often enough.

To my mommy dearest: I love you, I love you, I love you. Thank you for giving me life. You are honest, hard working, loving, and selfless....and everyone around you knows it. Thank you for having me, loving me, and always being there for me. You da best.

Photo credits: myself, Marz, Amira, Mali, and River :)

  • INSPIRE ME MONDAYS - THE WORDLE

Last week my daughter came home with a framed "wordle" that her student teacher, Mrs. Tabeling, had given her. This wonderful human being had taken time out of her day to create one for each of the 22 students in her 2nd grade class. If you aren't familiar with a "wordle" (I know I wasn't), it's basically a collection of words. In this case, adjectives describing each child's positive attributes. The teacher described my little Mali perfectly. I couldn't help but to be a little jealous of Mali's wordle. I thought about what my own wordle would look like. Geez. In my mind, my own would contain words like "stubborn" and "discombobulated." "Impatient" would be another good one. It's not that I don't see myself in my daughter's wordle, but for the most part, I feel too messy to be "endearing," too busy to be "friendly." Mali is such a kind soul. She's the girl who saves bugs and worries about the temperature of her pet hermit crabs' tank. She inspires me. She's way sweeter than I was when I was 8. I wouldn't have described myself as "agreeable" then, and still wouldn't today. HA! We are a lot alike, but for her positive attributes that are all her own, I am quite grateful. I'm sure I don't see myself as others do necessarily, none of us ever do, but I am going to try to be more "calm" and less "OCD." Regardless. I like these "wordle" things. Wordle, wordle.

  • INSPIRE ME MONDAYS - WAITING FOR AVOCADOS

As I write this I am completely distracted. I am distracted by my chaotic apartment. I am distracted by my own thoughts. I am distracted by my son, who moments earlier was completely enthralled with his boyish anime computer game, but has now decided he needs my full attention. I ask him to please wait. I am distracting by a beeping oven...the pizza's done. My son informs me that the oven is beeping. Grr. I get up. I serve my cutie a slice of pizza and sit back down. He proceeds to whine about how spicy pepperonis are, then starts telling me a story about eating pizza. I give up. And laugh out loud. I am reminded constantly that life is to be taken lightly, no matter how serious I try to make  it.

I've been incredibly distracted lately. Mostly because I am anxious. I don't feel the least bit settled where I am. Those who know me well know why. But for everyone else I will be annoyingly vague. I am patiently waiting for the next phase in my life to get going. Don't get my wrong, I'm not depressed. Quite the opposite. I'm excited. I'm READY. I've never felt so ready for life to start moving on up to where my heart knows it will eventually be. But I must be patient. I know there's a reason for this played out, overdone transition in my life. Over the weekend my family and I lazed around the house. We played games, watched TV, and spent time outdoors. My husband finally got around to changing out the soil in our avocado tree plant. The kids helped and I decided to just sit back and watch (and take pictures of course.) I was struck with a revelation when my husband had my four year old son stand beside the avocado tree. We planted the seed of an avocado in a small pot a little over 2 years ago. Avocado plants are evidently hard to grow, but, so far, this thing has slowly grown like a champ, even under less than ideal conditions. It now towers over my son. And we hadn't even noticed. What if our little seed had grown impatient and decided that it simply wasn't worth the time it took to become a tree? Nature is full of lessons.

So. Note to self: Remember to take everything in. Be present. Be patient with yourself and with your path. You will reap the benefits of the fruit, but first you need to let those roots grow strong. All great things require time, persistence, and patience. Chin up. Calm down. Dance around.

    I freaking love them. XOXOX

  • INSPIRE ME MONDAYS - AROUND THE WORLD

    Moshi Moshi!

Most Thursdays, at 4pm, I take my children and my nephew to our local library for "Big Kids Club".  For one whole hour, I get a break from mamahood and the kids get a story, snack, and craft time. It's delicious. This past Thursday they had a guest educator come in to talk to the children about other cultures and their customs. She had several tables set up, representing food, games, and clothing from various countries. The kids had a blast dressing up, learning new games, and feeding me fake tacos. Kids get so much joy out of the smallest of things. We should all take more time out of our oh so important schedules to pretend, and maybe dream. Today after I pick up my children from school (and after they've finished up their lovely mountain of homework) we will play. I think I'm in the mood for a fake veggie burger with a side of chocolate milkshake.

  • INSPIRE ME MONDAYS - SPRING BREAK VACAY

Over Easter weekend, my family and I crammed ourselves into a van and headed south on I-65 towards Orange Beach, AL. Our trip was short and sweet, but totally worth every second. Below are a few of my favorite snapshots from our mini vacation. Next go around we will stay longer. (And I will NOT have a freaking cold.)

    Front view...

    Bay view from our balcony...

    Till next time.....

  • INSPIRE ME MONDAYS - ART, WITH A SIDE OF GIRL POWER

Powerful women come in all forms. Perhaps my favorite are women in the arts. Below are two images I captured at Boheme Collectif, an eclectic studio space co-owned and operated by two women. I will do a full blog post on this lovely space and the artists involved soon! They have way too much awesomeness going on for me not to. But for now I will leave you with this:

"I'm afraid that if you look at a thing long enough, it loses all of it's meaning"

  • INSPIRE ME MONDAYS - CURIOSITY

The word science comes from the Latin "scientia," meaning knowledge. Science is what we use to rationalize our daily realities. To watch curious children analyze the world through trial and error is a beautiful thing. We are never too old to question what we see. I think we often times forget that.

It's okay to not have it all figured out. Wisdom is a sure sign of plenty of experimentation.
